I often get asked “what do you do?” The quick answer is I’m a professional certified coach. The reality is people don’t really know what that means or how it can help. As coaches we need to paint a picture of what we do for potential clients that come to us.
Our job as leaders is to evolve human capacity. With the speed of change in today’s world, this is not optional. If you are struggling to motivate those you support and tap into their innate strengths, then you cannot expect the best from them. One of the outcomes of effective coaching is to unleash the full potential of those you support. Doing so with those you support will in turn improve your bottom line. Leaders who utilize a coach approach have far greater success than those who don’t. This is why it is critical that coaching skills become an essential leadership competency for all leaders (and we’re all leaders) whether one aspires to become a professional coach or not.
Coaching is not just about creating outstanding business results (although it does do that too!). Applying a coach approach engages more brains, develops human potential and helps us think differently. Applying a coach approach as a way of being, opens up endless possibilities and can make our world a better place one conversation at a time.
If you’re thinking “I don’t have time to even think about hiring a coach let alone coach my team” because you’re already too busy, I get it. I’m here to say, if you are tired of spinning your wheels, want better results and feel a deeper calling for something bigger, you must find a way to make time. You are worth it.
What Coaching Is and Is Not
Before you begin your journey toward playing bigger in your life and having more impact, let me be clear about a couple of important things. Just as graduate or professional degrees are not the be-all and end-all for being a successful leader or business owner, nor is working with a professional coach the only method towards creating positive, lasting change and create extraordinary results. It may, however, be the most overlooked and undervalued.
On the topic of professional coaches, I don’t want to assume that you are fully aware of professional standards, as there are many contrasting views and thousands of credentialed and non credentialed coaches out there.
What is coaching?
The International Coaches Federation (ICF), the gold standard and the world’s largest body of professional coaches, defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.” Coaching accelerates the client’s or team member’s progress by providing greater focus and awareness of choice. Through the process of coaching, clients deepen their learning, improve their performance, and enhance their quality of life (coachfederation.org).
The heart of coaching is in the conversation, which takes time, training, courage and commitment from organizations, leaders and aspiring coaches. This is easier said than done in today’s environment of constant change. But you’re in luck! I can help you with this in The Coach Approach System™.
Coaching conversations are where breakthroughs happen and “impossible” futures are declared possible. The coach shows up fully present and committed to the client’s success. The person being coached walks away with new insights, inspired and committed to action.
The problem is, a coaching methodology is a common missing link among leaders and coaches and is actually a vital piece of their everyday toolkit to lead others toward achieving greater success.
This is why I created The Coach Approach System™, so I could help more coaches, leaders and managers become more effective by developing coaching skills to empower their teams.
